Artist Statement

When people think of disabilities, typically we think of people with physical deficiencies.

But I know a lot of people, including my mother who have internalised disabilities.

So I decided to draw a picture of my mother to represent all women with invisible, internal battles. She has endometriosis, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue. But she is the strongest women I know, and she fights through her pain to look after me and my sister.

I drew my mum with her favourite plants: monsteras, and her favourite flowers: Icelandic poppies. The poppies’ colours represent my mother’s disabilities: purple for fibromyalgia, yellow for endometriosis and dark blue for chronic fatigue. And the glitter in her hair and the background also have the same colours. I hope that this drawing can be inspiring to people going through internal struggles, and know that you’re not alone, and just because people can’t see your disabilities doesn’t mean they’re not valid.
