The Artist

I moved into a brand new house in 2015, and have a boring green fence to look out of every window! I realised it was going to cost a lot to buy at least 3 waterproof artworks to put on the fence, so I looked into doing mosaics. But I wasn't keen on breaking any plates, or buying the materials needed. So I started collecting bottle tops. First I did my house number, then had lots leftover, so made a butterfly. I've since made an owl, a dog, a bonsai, a dragonfly with flowers, a giant red poppy and a few others. They do rust when left in the rain (and some coloured plastic ones fade in the sun), but I think that adds to the art. I've always been creative and crafty, and also enjoy cross-stitching, scrap-booking, card making and more recently, pyrography. I enjoy creating something out of waste, and often collect things from neighbour's junk collections! I love it when people smile when looking at something I've made.

Artist Statement

I took inspiration from the Tree of Life pendants in jewellery magazines. I had the mirror and collected all the corks and bottle tops from family and friends (no, I didn't drink that much alcohol!). I started doing art from recycled materials as I don't believe in throwing things out after one use. I like to find creative ways to use things again instead of throwing them away. Waste is an issue I'm passionate about and I hope I inspire others to reduce their waste too. I like trees, and are thankful for nature in my life. I also do bonsai, and styled this tree similar to a bonsai. I have a lot of guidance and leaders in bonsai, but I can guide people just starting out too. I hope people look into the mirror and see the potential in themselves, as I believe anyone can achieve anything they set their heart on.
