The Artist

Amy James is a 24 year old Warumungu woman who lives in Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. Amy is a young woman with disability (including cerebral palsy). Amy is willing to try her hand at most things and recently created this beanie at a beanie making workshop at the Paterson Street Hub in Tennant Creek for the 2021 Yarning Myths and Legends Alice Springs Beanie Festival.

Artist Statement

The artwork is a red woollen felt beanie/hat with a flat horizontal top and flat vertical side wrapping around the circular top. The coloured image on the top is a needle point felting likeness of Jess Mauboy’s face. The side panel has a musical staff, where the dot at the bottom of the staff dangles on a string as a black felt ball about 3cm below the bottom of the beanie, and the musical score for “You were always on my mind, you were always on my mind” are in black woollen yarn going all the way around the beanie.
