Speaking Up For Yourself

A story about the importance of speaking up for your rights.
This is about speaking up for yourself and standing up for yourself.
People with a disability are often picked on because of our disability, but we should be treated the same way as everyone else. We should be treated as a normal person.
When something is wrong, many people with a disability are too scared to speak up and say something. Many people need help to speak up and say ‘I need help with my problem.’ This is ok.
When people with disability work, when we are at school and when we use public transport, people treat us differently. People do not treat us the same as everyone else because we have a disability.
In life we need to treat each other the right way! It does not matter if you have a disability or you do not. You are still a person.
When you are using a service and you are not happy with it, you have the right to make a complaint. Some people with a disability need help to make a complaint. They should be able to ask for this help.
When you are out and something goes wrong, you have a right to ask for help.
If you are from a non-English speaking background and have a disability, you may find it harder to speak up, but you should still ask. You still have a right to get the help you deserve.
My message is to all people with a disability… When something goes wrong, you can and should stand up and speak up. You can get help. You can make a complaint. You have a voice.
As a person with a disability you have the ability so do this. As a women with a disability have the right to do this.
